“As children, we see the rainbow and notice its beauty and sparkle, and now as adults, we might come to appreciate that the rainbow actually represents a mutual act of courage and connection. It is a leap of faith. It is a way to say “we don’t know for sure what the future holds, but we’re willing to give it a try and to move forward together….
We can do the same in our personal relationships because we know that with intimacy comes the possibility that trust can be broken. We know that our loved ones will make terrible mistakes, and so will we. And again and again, with a mutual desire for reconciliation, relationships can and will be repaired.
This is the beauty of a covenant. It doesn’t demand a perfect story without roadblocks or missteps. Rather, it asks for the commitment to return to our best selves every day, even after we’ve hurt or been hurt.
May we appreciate( this idea) with the wonder and awe of childhood and the wisdom and knowledge of time. May we experience a renewed ability to actively choose love and trust against all odds. And may our faith in ourselves and each other shine with the brilliance and nuance of a rainbow.”
